South Korea

In April, I traveled to South Korea. I spent the first days in Seoul and although I was busy attending a conference, I managed to roam through town. After Seoul, I toured the country for another week with stops in the Seoraksan National Park, Andong and the Hahoe Village, Gyeongju and Busan.

SEOUL

Wandering around the various markets that link the country’s ultra-modern and flashy appearance to a grounded and traditional way of living was one of my personal highlights.

Parks such as Namsa Park, palaces (e.g. Changgyeonggung) and temples are beautiful retreats within the mega city’s endless and bustling streets.

SEORAKSAN

After Seoul, I went hiking in the Seoraksan National Park, which is located at the east coast close to a town called Sokcho.

ANDONG

The next stop was Andong, where I spent my birthday and celebrated it with a healthy grub snack and regional soju (the best in Korea). From there, I took a bus and visited Hahoe Village – an original village with traditional houses beautifully located within a river bend.

GYEONGJU

Gyeongju is a nice and laid-back town with lots of interesting grass hill tombs from the Silla empire (there is also a well-maintained history museum that is worth a visit).

BUSAN

The last stop was Busan, Koreas second largest city that offers beaches, a picturesque lighthouse, large malls, a fish market and – with clear weather – views of Japan.
